Summary
[edit]DescriptionTramway Museum, Crich - geograph.org.uk - 1513701.jpg |
English: Tramway Museum, Crich In this picture on the left is an unpowered Tower Wagon, used for maintenance of the overhead wire. It has been brought out by the ex-Leeds works car seen behind it. On the right is Sheffield Standard car No 189, built in 1934 by Sheffield Corporation using direct labour. The Sheffield Standards, although they were 4-wheel cars, tpyified all that was best in British tramcar practice at the time. Robust, yet of a pleasing design, they served the city well all through World War II and until almost the end of Sheffield tramways is 1960. Not surprisingly, trams were popular in Sheffield: they ran on electricity produced from South Yorkshire coal, and the steel tracks were produced in Sheffield as well. In 1993, trams returned to the city, but that's another story. |
