. Thewarning proved, unhappily, all too true, and it wassoon found that in some of the supposedly cured onesthe symptoms were returning. The possible explana-tion was that some of the germs must have beenuntouched through being secreted in tissues notreached by the atoxyl, and therefore were able toappear in the general blood-stream later, after thepassage of the drug. A further theory put for-ward was that, as in the case of other germs, whataffected the mature specimen sometimes failed toaffect the embryo, so, whilst the atoxyl destroyed thefully developed trypanosomes, the embryos in thesystem, by coming to maturity later, were able tobring back the symptoms of the disease. Experi-ments have therefore been made with a new injectionwhich may act upon the embryo, so that the wholefamily, in all its stages of development, may be clearedout, and Sir R.
