te. Things went on fairly comfortably from day to day,whilst the lake was smooth, but at times it could beruffled and disquieting, and half-way through thevoyage we had such an experience of it. Late one afternoon the sky became overcast, abreeze sprang up, the water became choppy, and thewaves battered the sides of the canoe and threw theirspray over upon us. A far-distant island was pointedout as our destination, which an hours paddlingseemed to bring little nearer. Another hour went by and then we could see greatbanks of cloud rolling up from the horizon ahead ofus. Paddling was heavy work against the wind, butthe island had been getting nearer, and the paddlerswere straining every muscle in their race with theadvancing storm. Length by length the canoe was driven through thewater, nearer and nearer came the shore, and at lastwe ran into the little bay, and landed just as the edgeof the cloud discharged its first heavy drops upon us.We had won the race, but were none too soon. It was well indeed for us, and a cause forthankfulness, that the storm had held off so long andhad not overtaken us on the water, or our positionmust have been a critical one. Later on in theevening one of the party was found to have fever,and it was resolved to rest on the morrow and takethe opportunity of drying our drenched clothing.
