Summary
[edit]DescriptionTram at Blackpool, South Shore - geograph.org.uk - 1616442.jpg |
English: Tram at Blackpool, South Shore This is 'Coronation' class car No 660. About 24 of these cars were new in the early fifties and they were very fine cars indeed, fast, with four motors per car and an advanced 'Vambac' control system, bearing many resemblences to the American PCC car. But they did not do well in Blackpool: their speed could not be exploited as, inevitably, they caught up with and were impeded by, the car in front. The four motors required extra maintenance, and the control system often required specialist attention beyond the scope of the Rigby Road staff.
All this led to most of the cars having the 'Vambac' system removed and replaced by a simpler system. The cars are all now withdrawn from frontline service and most scrapped, although 660 and 663 are preserved and so is No 304, which still retains the 'Vambac' system. |
