[edit]DescriptionTrain smashed up by our shell fire (4687926897).jpg |
English: This photograph highlights an important aspect of military transport. It depicts a series of burnt-out train wagons, identified by the caption as having been destroyed by the Allies. Both sides had used the railways for military purposes from the beginning of the war, for moving men and supplies. The Germans, with their central position in Europe, were particularly well-placed in this respect. The importance of railway communications is illustrated by the appointment of the General Manager of the North Eastern Railway, Sir Eric Geddes (1875-1937), first as Minister of Munitions, then from 1916-1917 as Inspector General of Transportation in France. |
