| Description |
English: Train approaching Ely North Junction. Train on the March/Peterborough line approaching Ely North Junction. The train is a two-car Class 170 diesel set in the livery of the CrossCountry train operating company. The track and overhead electricity wiring of the London to Kings Lynn mainline can be seen seen nearer the camera position. This view was taken from the Fen Rivers Walk long distance footpath. The west tower of Ely Cathedral > 1601505 can be glimpsed on the horizon (at left).
Ely North Junction is located at Queen Adelaide, approximately one-and-a-half miles north of Ely station. From Ely North Junction the electrified ex-GER London-Kings Lynn mainline runs north to Littleport, Downham Market and Kings Lynn. Two non-electrified double-track lines branch at North Junction: one diverges northeast to Norwich (it is marketed as "Breckland Line") and the other northwest to March and Peterborough where there are connections to the East Coast Mainline (ECML) to Scotland and the route to Birmingham. |
