Description

To explain this photo I emailed Tom Lampman (AKA Lampy) and he wrote:


"This is a Railroad Tower and these are called Armstrong levers. They got their name because when it was cold outside it took two men and a boy to pull these levers to throw switches. These levers are connected to rods that ran to the switch points to line the switch for the trains route."

The busy New York Central and Norfolk and Western tracks crossed at this Worthington, Ohio location. The tower operator had a job as critical as the air controllers of today.

I took the photo with a 5x7 Premo during the winter of 1937-38 on a visit to the tower with a couple friends.
