| Description | Introduced, cool season, biennial, erect, hairless herb 0.3–1.2 m tall. Basal leaves are grass-like, linear, half-sheathing at base; cauline leaves are stem-clasping, linear to lanceolate. Flowerheads have 1-few heads which open in the morning and closed during day. Florets are ligulate, pale to deep purple and shorter than involucral bracts. Achenes are ribbed, long-beaked and have a plumosepappus. Flowering is from spring to mid-summer. A native of Europe and Asia, it is a weed of disturbed areas, such as roadsides and wasteland; also found in disturbed sites in woodlands; mostly on sandy loam soils. |
