24 THE COTTAGE GARDENS, QUEENS, L. I. CAN N AS. The season of 1898 was the most favorable for Canna growth of any we have had at Queens. Our bulbs are unusually large and in splendid condition. Prices are for strong dormant bulbs except where noted, and delivery can be made at any time that weather admits of shipping. Purchasers desiring large lots are requested to send list of what they need for special quotations. Our list has been thoroughly pruned, and contains only the cream of the existing sorts.
Text Appearing After Image:
Field of New Canna PRESIDENT McKINLEY. SPECIAL VARIETIES OF RECENT INTRODUCTION. President McKinley. Pronounced by all the best dwarf crimson bedder introduced. Color a fiery deep crimson-scarlet, the nearest approach to the color of Alphonse Bouvier of any canna we have. It is an early, constant and immensely profuse bloomer, throwing a strong flower spike early in June, when 12 to 18 inches high, and is covered continually thereafter with its startling brilliant heads of bloom. During the months of July, August, September and October it is a mass of intense color. Habit dwarf, reaching 3% feet at the end of the season on very rich soil. It is well foliaged, stools freely, and is equally valuable for pot culture, single specimens on the lawn or for massing. No florist can afford to be without it. Having a large healthy stock we can offer it at the very reasonable price of $1.50 per doz.; $10 00 per 100. President Cleveland. This variety has attracted wide- spread attention the past season, and is conceded to be one of the finest introductions of late years. Color is bright orange-scarlet. It is one of the showiest varieties. A fine compact, vigor- ous grower, throwing up numerous immense trusses with flowers of large size. One of the best bloomers on our grounds this season. A grand bedder. $1.50 per doz.; $10.00 per 100. Black Beauty. (True.) A grand novelty, as highly colored as a dracsena. The most striking canna ever introduced. Grand foliage, 5 to 7 feet high. The finest dark-leaved canna. Nothing can equal it in color of foliage. The finest thing for centres of groups, or among shrubbery wherever a tall grower is required. Very scarce. $1.00 each for 4 inch pots; $10.00 per doz. Remember you can get one thousand Cannas, our selection, 10 varieties for $ 15.00.
