IS THE COTTAGE GARDENS, QUEENS, L. I. GENERAL J^ST OF (^ARNATIOXS.
Text Appearing After Image:
Bench of New York, taken in December, 1898. New York. (Scott x Daybreak). Bright cerise-pink, resembling Bridesmaid. Habit erect, strong, vigorous, free and early as well as a constant bloomer, one of the best we have ever grown. Color magnificent under gaslight. Flower, medium to large, 2% in. to 3 in. in diameter, with good strong calyx. Similar in form to Scott. Stem rather stronger than Scott. Good fragrance. A first-class deep pink of a shade- that is very popular with flower buyers, and which sells fully as well as any pink carnation we send to the New York market. During the past season this variety proved our most profitable pink carnation, producing some 7 long-stemmed flowers per plant in excess of any other sort (save Maceo), and 6 blooms more than any record Scott ever made with us. It has improved in vigor of growth, color and profuseness of bloom this season. $5.00 per 100; $40.00 per 1000. Jubilee. Color intense scarlet, very large flower on long slender, but stiff stems, strong non-bursting calyx. This variety is doing well with a number of growers. Seems to do best when grown inside all summer, as then it is not so much affected with rust as when lifted, and also does best on a strong stiff soil. $2.00 per 100. Evelina. A pure white of large size, good form and substance. A strong calyx, fragrant, and borne on long, stiff stems. It is a free, early and continuous bloomer, of good habit and a strong, free grower. A variety of much promise and well worth a second trial. $5.00 per 100 ; $40.00 per 1,000. Victor. A deep pink sport from Daybreak, a stronger and more vigorous grower. Fine large bloom, on a remarkably long and strong stem. A great favorite around Philadelphia. Victor has made a much better showing with us than ever, and is entitled to a thorough trial as one of the best dark pink carnations. $2.50 per 100; $20.00 per 1,000. Wm. Scott. Bright pink. One of the most produc- tive large flowered pink carnations. Flower medium to large size, 2 to 3 in., on long stems, of good substance and stiffness. More generally grown than any other carnation. $1.50 per 100 ; *12.00 per 1000.
