NOVELTIES IN CARNATIONS. The constant increasing deserved popularity of this the choicest and most useful of all florists' flowers has shown no signs of abating, but on the contrary the demand as well as the prices received for good carnations have been stronger during the season just passed than in any previous season. The flower buying public have evidently become acquainted and learned in a measure to appreciate the durable merits of the improved spicy beauties, and to this knowledge we may attribute much of this increased interest and demand. While some varieties disseminated have not met with substantial success, many of the newer sorts are fast becoming standards, and when carnation growers generally learn to treat the new varieties according to their particular needs, we shall see a still more marked improvement in the average carnation offered for sale, and a consequent marked increase in the demand. We have nine large houses devoted to growing and testing new varieties, and having added ample propa- gating houses and heated frames in which to carry young plants, our customers may be assured of getting plants that have been grown under the best possible conditions.
Text Appearing After Image:
House of New Crimson Seedling GEN'L MACEO. GEN'L MACEO. (Ward). Very full deeply fringed flower, 2% in. to 2% in. in diameter, on stiff, wiry stems, 12 in. to 18 in. long under ordinary culture. Under extra culture blooms 3 in. in diameter, on 18 in. stems may be grown. Ground color deep brilliant scarlet, heavily overlaid with maroon, making one of the darkest and richest shades yet seen in carnations, fully as rich and striking as the Meteor rose. Habit erect, stiff, wiry — of the McGowan type, but with stiff, stronger stems. Foliage covered with rich glaucous bloom. Cuttings produced as freely as with McGowan and root fully as easily as that variety. The most profuse and abundant bloomer we have ever grown, outblooming every other variety. Flower an excellent keeper and can remain on the plant six to eight days, and we have kept it three and a half weeks in a cool bedroom. The best and most profitable dark carnation we have grown. $10 per 100 ; $75 per 1,000. Remember you can save 5 per cent, on all your purchases by sending cash with your order.
