Bench of Carnation BON TON, Growing Without Supports. Bon Ton. Bright, warm scarlet, large, deeply fringed, fragrant flower on a stem as stiff as a reed. Perfect calyx. Habit of the plant exceptionally strong, resembling Portia, but much heavier and more vigorous. The growth is so strong that it does not need staking. Comes into bloom with a fine crop for Christmas when scarlet carnations are so much in demand, and increases in quantity and quality as the season advances. A great favorite in all markets and brings the highest prices. Has proved an early bloomer with us this season. $±-00 per 100 ; $35 per 1000. Santa Rosa, California, Dec. 16th, 1898. Me. F. A. Blake, Rochdale, Mass. Deab Sir:—During the past 20 years I have grown many thousands of the best Carnations but have never seen one yet as satisfactory in all respects as your plants sent last spring. They are wonderful bloomers, very healthy, stocky, multiply rapidly and the color is all that could be desired, being even finer and more brilliant by artificial light. It is the best bedder. (Sincerely yours, LUTHER BURBANK. Daybreak. Delicate salmon-pink. Vigorous grower. Color, when at its best, very soft, clear and pleasing. Flower will not stand in full sun, as the color bleaches and should be shaded when sun is strong. A very popular variety, which seems to give a paying crop in nearly all localities. Does well on nearly all soils. Should be grown cool to give best results. $2.00 per 100; $15.00 per 1,000. Mayor Pingree. Color clear lemon-yellow, lightly marked with pink and occasionally splashed with white. A very strong, robust grower. Blooms measure 2V£ in. to 3 in. and overi n diameter. Stems extraordinarily stiff from 18 to 30 in. long as the season advances. Excellent keeper. $2.50 per 100; S20.00 per 1,000. Empress. (Swayne). Bright rich crimson, base of petals fiery scarlet, large, perfectly double flowers, 3 or more inches in diameter, deeply fringed and decidedly fragrant. Strong, vigorous habit, stems stiff and erect, 2% to 3 ft. long. Hardy, vigorous grower, and good bloomer. The largest dark carnation yet introduced, has proven late in coming into bloom with us this season and seemed inclined to burst late in the spring. $5.00 per 100 ; $40.00 per 1000. Firefly. Deep scarlet, resembling Garfield. Early, continuous bloomer; large, well-formed flower, 2% inches and more in diameter. Strong, vigor- ous foliage covered with heavy bloom. Intro ducer claims it to be disease proof. S5.00 per 100.
