Summary
[edit]DescriptionTrackbed of the Harlaxton ironstone railway - geograph.org.uk - 1466666.jpg |
English: Trackbed of the Harlaxton ironstone railway. The line, opened in June 1941, climbed from Casthorpe Junction on the Denton Branch on a stiff gradient with tight curves. Originally the line ran behind where I am standing and snaked across the fields to the reversing point at Swine Hill (see SK8832). After the quarries closed in 1974 and the railway was lifted, there was a short-lived attempt in the late 1970s to bring ore down to Casthorpe by lorry. A north-to-south cut-off (shown starting here, to the left) gave the lorries a shorter journey than the trains had had. The railway and the lorry cut-off are now a farm track. |
