Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Track, Little Ridge Wood near Fonthill House. Little Ridge Wood covers much of the greensand ridge between the hamlet of Ridge and Fonthill Lake, and overlooks Fonthill House just to the south. Here a track runs along the top of the ridge and through the wood at about 180m, and towards the lake which is 1.5km to the west. About 3.5km to the north is the much larger Great Ridge Wood which lies on chalk, both woods being part of the Fonthill Estate, see 465121. Little Ridge Wood is also the location of the last country house to be intentionally demolished. Little Ridge, also known as Fonthill House (one of a succession of houses with the same name in the area going back to the sixteenth century) was built in 1904 and was regarded as an 'art and crafts' house, but was not protected by the historic protection legislation in force at the time, see http://lh.matthewbeckett.com/houses/lh_wiltshire_littleridge_info_gallery.html
