Description Shaffron from the royal armories in the Tower of London. A Shaffron is a piece of armor designed to protect a horse's head. The tag accompanying the exhibit states: "Shaffron. This shaffron, for protecting a horse's head, is decorated with etched scroll work and has a plume tube in which feathers would be displayed. This is complete with its pole plate with sat on top of the horse's head and strapped onto the horse's bridle underneath. Italian, about 1560. Bequest of Dr Richard Williams, 1974. vi412."
