gorges, de-scending from an altitude of 2845 feet at AlbertCanyon Station to 1475 feet at Revelstoke, a dis-tance of twenty-two miles. Revelstoke itself is aprosperous town on the Columbia River, and is thechief entrance to the famed Kootenay mining region. Near Sicamous Junction lies the great Shuswap SicamousLake, one of the most remarkable bodies of water Junctionin the world. The great walls of the mountainsretain it in long narrow arms, many miles in length,and varying in width from a few hundred yards totwo or three miles. Ashcroft is a point of departure for the gold Ashcroftfields. Three miles to the west the route liesthrough a dismal gorge, almost terrifying in itsloneUness. It traverses the western slopes of theSelkirks, winding in and out of valleys, at timesburied in their depths, at intervals high up on themountain sides. Between North Bend and Yale,a distance of twenty-three miles, the canyon wallsare so narrow that the river dashes against themwith a terrific roaring.

THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. 8 I Just before Mission Junction is reached, near astation called Nicomen, one can see on the left ofthe train, fifty miles away, in the State of Wash-ington, Mount Baker, an isolated cone 14,000 feethigh. At Mission Junction the train turns south-ward to the United States border line. At this little station, 126 miles north of Seattle,the border line between the United States andCanada is passed. Descriptions of Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, theroute eastward to Yellowstone Park, and the Parkitself will be found in the section devoted to TourNo. 1, the route of Tour No. 2 between Portlandand the Park being the reverse of that traversed byTour No. 1. At Billings, 115 miles east of Livingstone, TourNo. 2 leaves the line of the Northern Pacific Rail-way and enters that of the Burlington Route.This is the greatest stock-raising and agriculturalcountry in the world.
