e greatest agricultural and stock rais-ing country in the world, with water facilities thathave enabled it to build up large manufacturing in-dustries, and with twelve railroads, giving it directcommunication with all the leading cities of theEast and West—is the business centre and largestand most important city of the trans-Mississippiregion. Founded in 1854, it has not yet passed thehalf-century mark; still, in religious, educational,and social advancement it has made such rapidstrides that its name has already become familiarfrom one end of the continent to the other. The Prairies Crossing the Missouri River to Council Bluffs,the special train speeds through the great farmlands of Iowa and Illinois to Chicago. The Mis-sissippi River is crossed at Clinton, There is noth-ing of great scenic interest in this section of thetrip beyond the magnificent stretches of prairieland, all under the highest state of cultivation. From Chicago the same route is covered as uponthe westward trip.
