mnity this growing city. Situated at thehead of Puget Sound, Tacoma has one of the larg-est and safest harbors in the world. The shippingof the place is a study. Vessels of every class andtype load and unload at the huge docks. A trampsteamer is perhaps docked alongside of a Chinesetea merchantman, or a Southern fruiter close to aSouth American trader. Several hours may alsobe spent in visiting the huge mills. Visitors to Portland leave it with great regret.Beautifully situated at the confluence of the Wil-lamette with the Columbia, it is one of the mostimportant commercial centres of the Pacific Coast.The climate is pleasant, the scenery grand. Thecity slopes west from the river to a range ofhills from whose slopes and summits may be hada magnificent view of the city, valley, river, andmountain range, with five eternal snow peaksstanding out in bold relief and varying in heightfrom 9000 to 15,000 feet above sea level.
