sota, and its private residences are bothelegant and tasteful. Minneapolis is only eleven miles from its rival,St. Paul. Minneapolis is noted for its fine resi-dences, public buildings, and drives. Its broad andhandsome avenues are lined with magnificent struc-tures, and its suburbs are charming. The drive toMinnehaha Falls is especially attractive. These pic-turesque and romantic falls are only a few milesfrom the city, upon a creek of the same name. Leaving St. Paul, the route lies through the beau-tiful lake region of Western Minnesota. For nearlytwo hundred and fifty miles the country is dottedwith lakes, both great and small, the progressivetowns of the State lying in between and on theirborders. As far as Little Falls, about one hundredmiles from St. Paul, the railroad follows the valleyof the Mississippi River. Thence a number ofpretty and prosperous towns dot the line to Moor-head, on the Red River of the North, the dividingline between the States of Minnesota and NorthDakota.

TheWorldsGranary Into the Cattle Country Between Fargo, the first large town within theborders of North Dakota, and the western borderof the State at Beach, is the great granary of theNorthwest. Wheat, corn, and flax fields, cover-ing thousands of acres, line the country on bothsides of the track. Bismarck, the capital of theState, and Mandan, located on the Missouri River,are the principal cities passed en route. Crossing into Montana, the route traverses thegreat cattle ranges of Montana to Glendive, lyingon the banks of the Yellowstone River. Along thebanks of this turbulent stream the party willjourney for nearly four hundred miles to Gardi-ner, the entrance to Yellowstone Park. And in-deed the course of the stream is traced almost toits source in the tour, for it has its rising in thegreat Yellowstone Lake, to be seen in the tour ofthe Park.
