I think I have seldom felt better pleased than whenour carriage turned off from the high road about sixmiles beyond Monterone, and we found ourselveson the way to Cervetri. Cervetri hashad three distinct existences, and has borne threeseparate names, which I beg the reader to keep inmind, when I give it any other appellation than theone it now bears. We find here earlier traces ofcivilization than in any other spot in Italy, and itwas first called Agylla under the naturalizedPelasgians, then Caere under the conquering Etrus-cans, and lastly Cervetri, after Caere had graduallydecayed under the Romans, who placed a colony oftheir own about two miles from the site, which theyalso called by the name of Caere or Cere, a nameremaining at this hour to puzzle travellers.
