(b. 1864, Albi, d. 1901, Château Malromé, Langon) Mademoiselle Cocyte in "La Belle Hélène" 1900 Watercolour and pencil on paper, 620 x 480 mm Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi The sick Lautrec spent the winter of 1900/1901 in Bordeaux, where he visited the Grand Théâtre and painted scenes from Isidore de Lara's opera "Messaline" and Jacques Offenbach's operetta "La Belle Hélène." We know from a letter to his Parisian friend Joyant, however, that he was not enamoured of the actress playing the beautiful Hélène: "Hélène is played by a fat sow called Cocyte."
