English: A view of the escape from Toulon Harbour on 11 January 1794 of the Juno, Captain Samuel Hood; together with letterpress sheet (RCIN 735021.b) giving an account of the action taken from the London Gazette for 22 February 1794. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).
Captain Samuel Hood (a distant relation to Lord Samuel Hood after whom he was named) had sailed his ship Juno into Toulon Harbour in search of the British Fleet, which, unknown to him, had already departed. Running aground, he was hailed by the French, wearing the national cockades. Realising his mistake, he managed to free the ship and escape. Published May 1st 1800, by R.
