Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tossa Plana de Lles (as it is known in Catalonia), or Pic de la Portelleta (as it is known in Andorra), lies in the Mont-Louis - Andorra batholith. That is a vast structure of plutonic rocks, of which granodiorite (as seen in the cliffs in this image) is the main constituent. These rocks formed around 300 million years ago (at the end of the Carboniferous period), during the Hercynian (or Variscan) orogeny (mountain-building period). The summit of Tossa Plana de Lles itself lies on a quartz vein (see inset), which may explain why its altitude is slightly greater than that of nearby peaks, all of which are below 2900 metres.
