In mid-June these Torreya californica seeds north of Santa Cruz have not yet attained their full size.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Torreya californica in the Coast Range north of Santa Cruz. Along this section of Scott Creek, an unusual number of tall torreyas can be found; cool ocean fog reaches far inland as the creek maintains a low elevation for many miles. Canopy height torreya may also be explained by logging of almost all the Coast Redwoods soon after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. This would have released into sunlight any saplings that survived the operation. And in this particular photo, a miniature RR station preserved the full-sunlight conditions, such that the torreya trees maintain their low branches, and those branches can produce many seeds.
