Description

Dos pontos mais altos da Cidade é a sua majestosa Torre do Relógio. As ameias da parte mais alta da torre, terão caído ou sido derrubadas, no seu lugar foi construído por Mestre Pascoal, em 1440, o apoio onde assentam o relógio e o sino cujas badaladas marcam as horas e se ouve em toda a cidade. Este apoio é feito de tijolo e não está em esquadria com a base da Torre. A data acima referida é a que se encontra na inscrição existente por cima da porta de entrada da torre no Largo de Santa Maria que se transcreve: «E : DE : MIL : CCC :… XL : EM ... XXXI … DIAS: DE JANEIRO: … E…UEEDOR: DESTA OBRA … I …L …P... ASCOAL … MESTRE: …» Esta Torre situa-se ao cimo da escadaria monumental sita no largo D. Jorge de Melo que leva à Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria e ao Castelo Velho. Possui no seu interior, uma escadaria em madeira com 52 degraus e no tecto de abóbada nervurada um escudo com quatro flores-de-lis. O Relógio que sempre marcou a vida dos naturais da Vila, durante anos ficou parado e era uma tristeza para quem se habituou a ouvi-lo. Em boa hora a Câmara Municipal o mandou reparar e hoje pode ouvir-se de novo, na agora Cidade de Serpa as "badaladas" que marcam o tempo. <a href="http://serpa-eriovasti.blogspot.com/2006/08/torre-do-relgio_15.html">serpa-eriovasti.blogspot.com/2006/08/torre-do-relgio_15.html</a>
