Description

Edifício de grande solidez estrutural e de marcada austeridade formal, com aspectos caraterísticos da arquitetura popular e vernácula de feição regional, que correspondem ao gosto de tradição maneirista muito arreigado nos edifícios públicos do Baixo Alentejo que datam dos inícios do séc. XVII.

Esta torre de carácter civil servida por uma escadaria exterior, é um tipo de imóvel que se generaliza em Portugal a partir dos séculos XVII-XVIII, em que geralmente se adaptava uma antiga torre da muralha da vila a torre de relógio. Em 1889, a Câmara Municipal de Almodôvar manda aí instalar o relógio que anteriormente se encontrava na Torre direita da Igreja Matriz de Santo Ildefonso, danificada por um raio, que foi posteriormente substituído por um mais moderno, em 1970.

É monumento de arquitetura de influências barroca, popular e vernácula, cuja cobertura se caracteriza por apresentar um coruchéu octogonal e uma platibanda vazada no coroamento, compondo-se ainda com um campanário decorado onde estava instalado o primitivo sino do relógio. <a href="https://cm-almodovar.pt/locais/torre-do-relogio/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">cm-almodovar.pt/locais/torre-do-relogio/</a>
