Summary
[edit]DescriptionTorquay Town Hall, west end - geograph.org.uk - 1577686.jpg |
English: Torquay Town Hall, west end. This "domed semicircular entrance block, the first floor articulated with a blind Ionic colonnade with paired columns; square-headed doorway below", as it is described at https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1208247 , was the entrance to the original public library, which explains a quotation from Eden Philpotts on this end of the main facade, "read wisely for a good book is a faithful friend" (a statement the logic of which has never entirely convinced me). A curious account of a visit to the opening ceremony, written in Dartmoor dialect, can be found in the January 1907 issue of "Devonia" at https://archive.org/stream/devonial06unituoft/devonial06unituoft_djvu.txt . So this end of the building pre-dates the rest by 4 years. The library is now housed in a later building round the corner on Lymington Road. See also 152224. |
