Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A GR4 Tornado from 9 Squadron takes off from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, headed for Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.

The UK sent two additional Royal Air Force Tornado jets to Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary announced on a visit to British forces serving there.

Dr Liam Fox, on his second visit to Afghanistan since being appointed Secretary of State, confirmed that the two Tornado GR4 aircraft were sent from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, arriving at Kandahar Airfield Thursday 12 August 2010.

The deployment followed a request by the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), General David Petraeus, for an increase in air support to provide greater protection to ground forces. The aircraft joined the eight RAF Tornado GR4s already provided to support the multinational pool and boosted flying hours by 25 per cent, or an extra 130 flying hours per month.
