Description
English: Torana of the Golden Gate (Bhaktapur)

Taleju Bhawani goddess on the Torana (Toran or Gokhim Nepal)) of the Golden Gate (Sun Dhoka) of Bhaktapur Royal Palace.

Taleju Bhawani is surrounded by Ganga (on a makara) and Jamuna (a turtle). Taleju Bhawani comes from South India (Karnataka Tulajapur), she was the tutelary deity of the Malla kings.

The Golden Gate is one of the masterpieces of the Newar art (Newari people is one of the main ethnic groups of Nepal and Kathmandu Valley), it is crowned by a frieze of Hindu gods and topped by mythical animals.

The palace was built during the reign of King Bhupatindra Malla (1696-1722) and completed in 1754 during the reign of his successor Jaya Ranjit Malla, the last ruler of the Malla dynasty.

A representation of Garuda (the animal mount of Vishnu) fighting snakes, is located above the goddess Taleju Bhawani is a form of Durga (Parvati epithet) to the four heads and ten arms.
