Summary

[edit]
Description

English: At the northwest base of the Arsia Mons volcano, which protrudes nine kilometers from its surroundings, there is the striking, 600-kilometer-long Aganippe Fossa furrow. Its origin is not clear. It could be a result of the volcanic activities of the Tharsis volcanoes, i.e. a result of the stretching of the crust as a result of the growth of the Arsia Mons volcano. This more than a thousand-meter-deep and three to seven-kilometer-wide furrow broke open at the northwest base of the volcano. A collapsed channel of thin lava in the subsurface is also being discussed. The color scale in the top right corner of the image shows the height differences of around 2,500 meters between low-lying blue and high-lying regions in red and brown.
