Typed manuscript of The History of the Tope Family Setting Forth a Full Account of the Trials, Successes, Peculiar Characteristics, Occupations, &c., of this Race of People in this Country down to Date by Melancthon Tope. John Tope immigrated to the United States in the 1760s from Germany and settled in Harper's Ferry, Maryland. His descendants and relatives lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa and elsewhere. This manuscript is concentrated, but not limited to, Ohio. Melancthon Tope (1857-1945) was a practical phrenologist living in Bowerston, Ohio. He was also the author of several books and editor of the Bowerston Patriot. He was married to Permelia (Gamble) Tope in 1883. |
