Description
English: Topaz
Locality: Xanda mine (Xandra mine), Virgem da Lapa, Jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil (Locality at mindat.org)
From October 1968....and an unrivalled pocket of topaz! You can read about this amazing find in the Bancroft book, GEM AND CRYSTAL TREASURES, page 207. This is a hefty piece, 424 grams (about 1 pound!). Words simply cannot do this specimen justice, and neither do any of the pics in my site. The piece literally glows with the deepest ice blue color you could ask for in one of these. I don't mean just a normal pastel blue - i mean a glowing, brilliant, internally gemmy , RICH blue color! It has a lustre like glass and is complete all around the righthand side and the termination except for the left side. It is contacted on that left side, and to so9me extent on the rear-left as well. However, it displays like a banshee, showing the sharp termination and sharp right side forward should you choose to display it head-on, as opposed to broad-side as have it here to maximize color presentation. The top and fine termination is well preserved. The front faces are sharp and glassy, as I said. These blue topaz were really one of the most important and beautiful finds of the heyday of Brazilian minerals, and a find like this has not been found since. Most folks will never have a chance to affordably own a large example from this find, let alone one with such impressive color. Perhaps not. But it IS nevertheless a very impressive piece that displays phenomenally from at least 2 good angles, and is at a very cheap price for a specimen of the size and display magnitude you see here 9 x 8.3 x 3.9 cm
