Description

To celebrate International Archives Day, we asked a representative from each of our 4 regional offices to explain their role & select their favourite record. You can see the selections on our Flickr account and check our Twitter account for further International Archives Day celebrations.

My name is Vivienne Cuff, from Archives New Zealand's Dunedin Regional Office. I have worked at Archives since 2000. My prime responsibility is Government Loans – processing requests from government departments to temporarily borrow archives from us. I also do reference enquiries, arrangement and description and appraisal. Before Archives, I worked at the National Library New Zealand in a number of roles.

For my current favourite, I have chosen a piece of correspondence from the Otago Provincial Government archives. It is the letterhead of the Otago Emigration Office in Edinburgh, Scotland. I am interested in this, because I am currently doing an evening class at Otago Polytechnic in printmaking (etching, aquatint, etc.). I like the technique in the picture – it is an engraving. It is Princes Street in Dunedin, looking south from the Octagon.

The letter is a reply from Thomas Caine[?] to Margaret McNamee of London. She has enquired about the whereabouts of her son, James McNamee, who came to Otago on the ship 'Nourmahal'. The 'Nourmahal' arrived in Otago in May 1858. Mrs McNanamee says in her letter that she hasn't received any news of him. Mr Caine suggests she write to John Logan, Clerk to Superintendent in Dunedin, Otago for assistance in finding her son.

It is also interesting in that gives more information about an immigrant than would be on a passenger list. It is in the inwards correspondence to the Otago Provincial Government.

The archives reference is: AAAC/707/D500/131a – 287
