English: Portrait of a mandarin from Hai Duong province, dressed in his solemn audience costume. The term Mandarin is used by Westerners to designate a high-ranking official literate and educated in the tradition of Confucius, put at the service of the Emperor of China, after a rigorous and very limiting selection of the best candidates. Mandarins have also existed in some neighboring states, including Vietnam. |
