Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tombstone of French prisoner of war, Moretonhampstead. This tombstone is in the porch of 939964. Many French sailors became prisoners of war during the Napoleonic wars, and although most were housed in hulks on the Hamoaze, or in the specially constructed Dartmoor prison, "on signing a declaration of good behaviour officers could go on parole in one of eight towns in Devon. These were Ashburton, Crediton, Moretonhampstead, North Tawton, Okehampton, South Molton, Tavistock and Tiverton". http://www.devon.gov.uk/localstudies/100304/1.html The inscription reads " 'A la memoire de Louis Ambroise Quanti, Lieut, du 44 Reg* du Corps Imperial d'Artillerie de Marine. Age de 33 ans. Decede le 29 Avril 1809.' The Masonic compass and dividers follow the inscription." https://archive.org/stream/prisonersofwarin00abeluoft/prisonersofwarin00abeluoft_djvu.txt
