Summary

Description

In April 2010 they and many of Poland's highest military and civilian leaders died in a plane crash in Russia when heading to the site of the Katyn massacre. They were going there in honor of its 70th anniversary.

The Royal Crypts offer the final resting place of kings and statesmen. All of Poland’s pre-16th century kings were buried beneath or within the Cathedral; the trend stopped in 1533 when King Sigismund I had his wife interred in a purpose-built underground vault. He joined her in 1548 and the crypts were expanded in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries to house the remains of nine more Polish kings, their wives and, in some cases, their children.
