A LITTLE KNACK 309 After showing the practical vahie of good field-ing I need scarcely recommend young cricketersto practise fielding with as much persistence asthey practise batting and bowling. In these days,when practice-nets are all the vogue, the oppor-tunity for learning fielding is less than it waswhen we practised without them. I think it is agood plan,when boys are practising, to occasionallydispense with the back net, and let one of the boysact as long-stop. There is more to be learned bylong-stopping than at first sight would seem to bethe case, because—especially if the ground is atall rough—the ball jumps about in all directions,and has to be watched carefully to ensure itsbeing picked up cleanly. Skill in catching should be cultivated, either bythe boys throwing the ball from one to another atvarying distances, or by the coach or parent, asthe case may be, hitting balls for catching off thebat.
