Title
tobacco jar lid handle (profile)
Description
English: Handle or finial from the lid of a cast lead tobacco jar, in the form of a man's head with defined, striated hair that extends to the back of the neck where it kicks outwards slightly into a straight edge. The face has large lentoid eyes, a protruding triangular nose and slightly pouting lips. Below the neck the finial expands into an everted circular base which could represent the shoulders. The finial then narrows to a cylindrical lug which would have attached to the lid that is now missing. The style of hair and countenance suggest that this character may represent the Cornishman John Wesley (1703-1791), who is credited with the foundation of the evangelical movement known as Methodism and who was renown for preaching against the use of tobacco. So this my have been used ironically, as a figure of fun, perhaps by Anglicans trying to ridicule his growing popularity in the county and beyond.

Bailey (2000) illustrates similar lead tobacco boxes on page 63, in figs.3-4, which he dates from the Georgian period (1714-1830).
