As soon as my things had been got into the house,I paid off and dismissed the coolies, keeping only fourwith me, as I intended to remain here all the summer. I should mention that the mission house, the use ofwhich was so kindly granted me, was situated on theside of a hill, and was facing Mount Wa, which towered6,000 feet above us. The day after my arrival I started to see what couldbe done in the way of collecting, and ascending theslopes of a hill opposite, a spur from the mountain,I got into a terribly bad road, very stony and preci-pitous, and much overgrown with jungle in places.Old watercourses had to be traversed. I found manyinteresting plants, which I collected to be dried, butcame to the conclusion that it was too early and coldyet for butterflies. It was bad getting up, but muchworse getting down.
