Though an oldcity, it has kept pace with the general advancement of the coun-try and now boasts, in addition to a population of 20,000, thepossession of good pavements, electric-lighted streets, waterworks and sewerage systems, trolley cars, dry docks, large ele-vators, handsome business blocks, capital hotels and, in fact, most of the appointments which serve to make up a modernizedcity. It will require no great effort on the part of the tourist, however, to establish a close connection between past and pres-ent in the points of interest which are likely to come under hisobservation. Should his entrance be made by water, probablythe first conspicuous objects to catch his eye will be what areknown as the Martello Towers, several of which are to be seenfrom the deck of incoming steamers, one, in fact, occupying ashoal right in the waterfront of the city.
