Martin Luther King was shot while standing outside of Room 306 on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel. Police believe that James Earl Ray fired the bullet from the second floor bathroom of the Young and Morrow Building and rooming house across across Mulberry Street and slightly north of the room. The small window is just below and to the left of the banner on the pole in the middle of the photo. A 30.06 rifle with his fingerprints was found in a Main Street entryway on the northside that building. A jury in 1999 said Loyd Jowers who operated Jim's Grill on the right side of the brushy knoll in the rooming house of participating in a government conspiracy to shoot King from ground level on the brushy hill also with a 30.06. Figuring into the debate is Fire Station #2 which is out of the photo to the left across the street from the Lorraine. Police watching King had been pulled back from the station shortly before the assassination. The Lorraine, the knoll and Young and Morrow Building now are all part of the National Civil Right Museum. The Young and Morrow building is now linked by a newly constructed tunnel under the knoll (pictured on the sidewalk to the right of the pole). Some other conspiracies say that in the famous photographs of aids pointing in the direction of the shots were actually pointing to a the tall building further north. [1] The view to the north from Room 306 has been obscured by construction of the main museum portion which rise above the motel and is thrust to the left of it.
