Katalogtext: "Die Identifizierung des Porträts als »Frau Schmidt-Capelle« ist nicht belegt, sie stammt vom Auktionshaus Christie’s, von dem das Gemälde erworben wurde. Ebenso verhält es sich mit dem Porträt »Dr. Schmidt-Capelle« von Tischbeins Onkel, Johann Heinrich d. Ä. (1875/1602), das durch den Titel den Eindruck erweckt, als handele es sich um den Ehemann. Es ist aber gut möglich, dass die Porträtierten nichts miteinander zu tun haben. Das Bildnis der Witwe könnte auch während Tischbeins Aufenthalt in Den Haag entstanden sein, wohin er im Februar 1786 für mehrere Monate aufgebrochen war, und eine andere Person darstellen. |
