English: Rough translation : "The battleship HMS Cornwallis bombarding the village of krithia ." Patriotic Comment: This photograph was taken from the French cruiser Provence at the time of the British naval artillery fire. During the Allied landings on both sides of the Dardanelles , the fleet had the same role as artillery when it " sprinkles " the enemy trenches to allow the infantry to attack with the bayonet. Our sailors are filled with a deep admiration for their comrades in the army and they are full of praise for the accuracy and the effects of the bombing of the fortifications of the coast by warships . Anglo- French fleet conducts indirect fire over the Gallipoli peninsula , following the information provided by aviation. The battleship HMS Cornwallis bombed the village of Krithia to protect the advance of the English landing . Photo published by the weekly The Mirror of 23 May 1915. |
