Summary

[edit]
Description

Tin Hau (Heavenly Empress) is a woman who actually had lived somewhere along the South China Sea coast, reputed to have had supernatural powers. She is a key deity in Taoism.

In the Chinese religious traditions, Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, is also revered in Taoism. Guanyin is known to take many different shapes - male, female, child, or animal - to approach those who call her name; here in southern coastal China, Tin Hau is considered to be one of those mortal manifestations of Guanyin.

There are dozens of Taoist temples in Hong Kong dedicated to Tin Hau; I am visiting one of the better known ones, the one smack in the middle of Kowloon, in Yau Ma Tei district, only a short walk from my hotel.

This banner is certainly alluding to Guanyin, whose name is pronounced as Kwun Yam in Cantonese.
