Hong Kong Museum of History. Here is a Tin Hau altar that I can photograph. This is pretty similar to the altars that I saw over at the Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei. Tin Hau (Cantonese for Heavenly Empress) was a woman who actually lived in Fujian Province and was reputed to have supernatural powers. She protects the sailors of the South China Sea, and is often considered to be one of the mortal manifestations of Guanyin. While Tin Hau is a Taoist deity and Guanyin primarily Buddhist, the diffusion and mixing of different religious traditions typical of Asian societies means Tin Hau and Guanyin often become one and the same. |
