Summary
[edit]DescriptionTiming is everything (904313037).jpg |
Carrots grow slowly and weeds grow quickly, so we try to clean the bed of weeds before planting. We do this with the flame weeder so we don't have to use chemical herbicides. On the left: two double rows of carrots (four rows total) which were flame weeded and planted early. The weed pressure at the near end is greater than at the far end of the row, so you can (almost) see the carrot lines under the weeds at the far end, but not at the near end. On the right: several more rows of carrots which were flame weeded and planted two weeks later. The weed seeds don't all germinate at once. The rows on the right were flame weeded after most of the weeds had germinated and emerged, so most of the weeds were killed by the flaming. On the left, the planting and final flaming were done before all the weeds had germinated and emerged, so the final weeding has to be done by hand now. |
