Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "The timewheel is a sculpture of time, the world's largest hourglass, at 8 meters (26 feet) in diameter and weighing 60 tons, the timewheel is built of enduring materials such as glass, stainless steel and granite, so that it can function for centures to come. The metal core regulates the flow of sand from the upper to the lower glass chamber. Adjusting for temperature changes and leap years. On the last day of each year, the timewheel is turned a half-circle so that the flowing of sand can resume and continue for the next year. The turning is done with cables and a simple rotating mechanism, through manual power rather than engines. The timewheel's primary function is not to measure time, but to portray its monumentality, streaming continuity and eternal movement."

The Timewheel was commissioned by the government of the Hungarian Republic and it was built with its support to mark Hungary's entry to the European Union of the First of May, 2004.
