| Description |
This time capsule is located in southern downtown Seoul, at the foot of Namsan, the hill that marks the southern boundary of the old city core. Seoul in its current form, as far as Old World cities go, is fairly new, dating back only to 1394, when a new Korean kingdom, Joseon, founded it as its new capital. 1994 was the 600th anniversary of the city's founding. To mark the occasion, South Korea declared "Visit Korea Year 1994," and a time capsule, with artifacts representing life in Seoul in 1994, was buried here, to be opened on the millennial anniversary in 2394. The time capsule is topped off with this granite marker inscribed with messages from mayors of Seoul's sister cities around the world. Here is a message from then-Mayor Frank Jordan of San Francisco, California, USA. (And for the record, that's where I had flown in from the previous day, utilizing my usual favorite airline, United, rather than the Korean Air - Asiana Airlines duopoly that runs nonstop from my Los Angeles home.) Seoul's primary sister city in the US is San Francisco, although Washington, DC has also been added later on; Los Angeles, the largest Korean city in America, is partnered instead with South Korea's No. 2 city Busan. |
