L’art des zelliges apparait au Maroc vers le Xe siècle après J-C. Il s’agissait au départ d’imiter les mosaïques romaines dont subsistent de nombreux vestiges en Afrique du Nord, non pas en assemblant des morceaux de marbres polis, mais des fragments de carreaux de faïence colorés. Mais le nom de « petite pierre polie » est resté. On retrouve d’ailleurs la même étymologie dans le mot Azulejo utilisé en Espagne et au Portugal.
