Tikal was discovered in 1848 by Coronel Modesto Mendez and Antonio Tut. Open to the public in 1955, protected by UNESCO at 1979. Tikal in Mayan means "In the lagoon", it is still known as "the place of the spirit voices". This ancient Mayan city dates from 800BC and last till 900AD. in 750 AD the nucleus of the city was about 65 square km.
